Masters of Arts
in Leadership and Training (2003-2005)
- Thesis: Indigenous Leadership, Challenges, and Leadership Training
- This project explores what leadership means to Indigenous
people, their perceived leadership challenges, and Indigenous
leadership development. I conducted this research to support
the potential for Indigenous leadership programs at Royal
Roads University. However, it may also appeal to anyone
with a genuine interest in Indigenous peoples and the development
of culturally relevant Indigenous program initiatives.
Information Technology Skills
(2001-2002)
- Project management - Building cooperative
teams, goal-setting, managing timelines, preparing
documentation, evaluation and assessments, budgeting, and
managing all levels of communications.
- Relevant Presentation Skills and Tools
- PowerPoint presentations, public speaking, Microsoft Word,
MS Project, MS Excel, Dreamweaver UltraDev, HTML, Website
Design and Database development.
- Created a website to promote products
for 'Gem Trees by Iris' in May 2002. Created two versions:
ASP
with a shopping cart and a marketing version.
- Created a website for the promotion of
the Dr. Patch Adams Vancouver Event on September 10, 2001
and awareness of his work on the development of the Gesundheit
Institute.
Aboriginal Cultural
Community Work (1990 - 2002)
Have been active in building cultural awareness since
1990 for interested individuals, children, families and
groups from all over the world.
The gatherings, circles and ceremonies are focused on the
spiritual and
personal advancement of the community and the people who serve
in them.
- Worked with a
group of elders in Saskatchewan and Montana in cultural
development Summer 2002.
- Addressed a group of Senators from
Thailand regarding Aboriginal Cultural conflict-resolution
issues.
- Performed sacred ceremonies for the Grand
Forks, BC community. (Summer 2002, Aug 2001)
- Have addressed, hosted and introduced
international groups and individuals to exchange spiritual
practices, culture and hospitality from countries such as
China, New Zealand, Tibet, India, Thailand, Japan, United
States, Australia and Tasmania.
- Have participated in several cultural
camps, whereby participants are engaged in camping, learning
and acquiring survival skills while promoting both personal
and spiritual growth.
- Established an unprecedented successful
and ongoing cultural program for the Saskatchewan
Institute of Applied Sciences and Technology (SIAST) in
Regina (1990-1993).
- Assisted in establishing a non-profit
organization by crafting the mandate and constitution of
toward
the organization and establishment of sacred Aboriginal
ceremonies on Vancouver Island.
- Conducted workshops to enhance Indigenous awareness and crafts.
- Continues to travel extensively to learn
from many elders and respected spiritual leaders.
Counseling and Social Work
- Employment and Life Skills Groups - Coached
individuals on Income Assistance Benefits in both SK
(1983 - 1993) and BC (1998 - 2000) to discover their personal
and educational potential and make
steps toward self-reliance and positive change, through
HRDC projects i.e. (Adult Learning Centre,
Courtenay; Yorkton Tribal Council, Yorkton; Native Daycare
Training, Regina) and the Department of
Social Services and SIAST Adult Education for the Non-Status
and Indian Métis Program (NSIM), Regina.
- Native Life Skills - Continued the development
of a Life Skills or personal development program
tailored for Aboriginal adult learners for SIAST. (1990-1991)
- Facilitated many individual and group
sessions utilizing conflict resolution, values clarification
and
personal development skills.
Organizational Services
- Royal Roads University's Aboriginal Employment
Partnership Initiative (AEPI) Student Representative
- United Way Board Member, Courtenay, BC and Regina, BC
- Health Canada Initiative - Aboriginal
Head Start Program - Coordinator for the Comox Valley and
was
recognized to be "the best and true to the original
mandate of all the Head Start programs for Canada".
- Executive Director of the Upper Island
Women of Native Ancestry, which is an organization designed
to provide programs and services that enhance a better quality
of life for Aboriginal children and their
families and raise Aboriginal cultural awareness in the
Comox Valley.
- Contemporary Women, Regina - Acted on
the Board of Directory for three years in the consecutive
role of Secretary, Treasurer and President. CW is an organization
designed to assist largely single-
parent women with the rigors of raising their children while
providing opportunities for social and
personal development.
Biography

Marian brings many
attributes to the team with a M. A. in Leadership and
Training, Social Services background, Indigenous ancestry
and spiritual training, and advanced Information Technology
skills. She is an experienced Program Coordinator and
Manager, Workshop Facilitator and Career Counselor for
a variety of government positions and contracts, technical
institutes, colleges and non-profit society agencies from
1979 - 2002. She is a skilled organizer, team-leader,
team-member and event organizer.
Her key strengths are in providing positive and constructive
leadership to any project delivery in a timely
manner with a strong sense of excellence and service to
people. She is dedicated to the health and wellness of
all people and our future generations. Marian is generous
with her time and creates a safe environment wherein personal
change is nurtured and experienced. |
