This project explores what leadership means to Indigenous people, their perceived leadership challenges, and Indigenous leadership development. I conducted this research to support the potential for Indigenous leadership programs at Royal Roads University. However, it may also appeal to anyone with a genuine interest in Indigenous peoples and the development of culturally relevant Indigenous program initiatives.
I engaged 19 research participants in this community-based exploratory research project gathering 21.15 hours of narrative data in one-to-one interviews. I interviewed 17 Indigenous leaders from Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan.
The study findings in Chapter 4 consist of 32 conclusions, framed under five themes: RRU Development, Program Development – Areas to Watch for, Course Design, Communication Styles and Factors, and Course Competencies. In Chapter 5, I have outlined 64 recommendations, 11 of which came directly from the participants.
I completed a Masters of Arts specializing in Leadership and Training (June 2003 - March 2005) at Royal Roads University, Victoria, BC. A written thesis was a requirement of the course.
